PWD Children's Resource Library Project

Who We Are?   library The PWD Library Project aims to establish a resource library at the PWDU centers in Kampala for children ages 1-8 and their parents where they can have access to materials that have positive effects on them. The books will be read by and to the children. The books at the center will include profiles of disabled people who have led successful lives, will teach parents and children about disabilities, and they will encourage literacy and self-esteem among the children. Books for parents about their child's disability and how to deal with it, deal with family/siblings, and other obstacles will also be included. We have recently added books from African authors in order to help promote cultural heritage.

Disabilities in children vary widely in Uganda - developmental disabilities, ambulatory disabilities, and deafness and blindness are all seen. Because of such a wide array of problems we are looking for materials in various media (print, recorded, braille, etc.) and those that are fiction and non-fiction.

How to Help Us

  • Browse the subject areas below and select the book(s) you wish to donate.
  • Follow the directions to purchase the book(s). Please include a gift card note (its free!) and give us your name and address, so we can thank you! We will also affix a nameplate on the inside cover that reads, "This book was donated with generosity by (name), (country), (date)."
  • Choose the address where you would like to send the books. Books can be sent directly to Uganda, or to a collection point in the US. Shipping addresses can be found below, or on any of the subject pages.

It is important that you include a gift card with your name and address so we can credit your donation. This information will not appear on the package slips otherwise. The gift card is free and it is the only way for us to know who donated what. Thank you!!!!

Within each subject, groupings between books for children and parents are provided.

We have also collected a general set of  books for children.

Of course, if you prefer you can have the items shipped yourself:
